A young man came to my door 1/29/09 selling magazine subscriptions to help him pay his way through college. After several minutes of conversation, I invited him into my home and looked at his list of magazines. I chose one and he filled out an order slip and took my check for $30.00. He told me they had a stamp for the company name, so I left the payable to part of the check blank. He gave me my receipt and told me I should receive my magazine in 90 to 120 days. The next day, after giving this some deeper thought, I tried to contact the name on the receipt and found out it was a completely ficticious name and address. There was no such company. I called my bank and was told the check was cashed the day I wrote it and the name it was payable to was Adam Badley. The name on the receipt I was given is Raymond Gutierrez. I tried for hours to locate the company on the receipt but could not locate them at all. Of course, I never received any magazine. I could not locate the name Adam Badley anywhere and have no idea who he is. So I paid a total stranger $30.00 for nothing because I am a charitable person when I am able and I support educational endevors. I was just too nice and way too stupid. I thought this young man was quite the actor though and should change his major to theatre arts. Never buy magazines from a door to door salesperson. Never leave a check blank in the pay to area. Look carefully at the receipt you are given and use some common sense when someone is asking you for money. He could have just asked me for $30.00 for beer and dope and I might have given it to him anyway. I got spoofed. The name on the receipt was FloRd Agency in Delray Beach, FL. It said "make checks payable to: Independent Contractor's Service." Dead end road trying to locate either business. Phony receipt. Phony person. Scam Scam Scam!
